Honors Drama I
Play Circle Costume Design Project: 60 points total
Costume Design Project: Design one costume for two characters in your play (two costumes total). Your design choices should reflect the historical time period/ year and place indicated by the script. That said, you can create suggestive or concept driven designs, as long as they make sense and can be justified by the text. Follow the steps below.
STEP ONE: Take design notes on the costume graphic organizers while reading (20 points)
As you read the play, fill out the graphic organizers, making note of important details about costumes in the stage directions or dialogue. Also consider the characters’ movements, actions, and their circumstances as you are note taking.
STEP TWO: Research/inspiration board (20 points)
After you read the play, you will create a research/inspiration board before you start your design. The board should serve as a jumping off point for your designs. You may create either a digital or a physical (paper) board. Your board must include a minimum of ten images including:
- At least FIVE historical photos/drawings from the time period and location in which the play is set
- At least THREE color, line, shape, or texture inspiration images
- At least ONE image that reflects the mood/feeling for your design
STEP THREE: 2 Costume Designs (20 points)
After you have decided upon your concept and researched the time period, you will create 2 fully colored costume designs (1 for your 2 chosen characters) on separate paper (minimum 8½ x 11). Character designs should also include fabric swatches or items that inspire the texture/fabric of the garment. You may choose to use any type of paper and any coloring/art materials you want, but the design should be neat. CREATE ONE COSTUME PER CHARACTER FOR A TOTAL OF TWO COSTUMES.
